At home, we have always believed "what we cook for 1 person, is what everybody eats, no special items". When granpa fell ill in 1990, it took the family by shock, cos till then it was just the common cold or fever. but when he had a heat stroke and heart problem, the family made the shift. The entire household switched from sundrop/sunflower oil to Gingely oil..even for dishes like Olan and avial, mum uses gingely oil or very little coconut oil. while making dosas, she adds a spoon of gingely oil to the batter so the oil consumption is barely any ultimately.
Sundrop is used only when making papad or poori, vada, bajji... This worked out fine because dad also fell ill and we had to follow similar diet for him..
Similarly, the salt used came down to nearly 1%. Today, our food has salt for the sake of salt. We are ok to eat without salt, but cant eat food that is salty [which makes it difficult to eat out]. Same applies to sugar, we dont/barely use sugar in coffee/tea/juices.
And now, last week granpa had a TIA, and so he has been advised to not eat certain veggies.. Greens, brinjal, tomato, drumstick, broccoli, cauliflower, curry leaves, mint, etc.... We have stopped using some of them, cos we feel bad he is unable to eat them. But I do use them in salads and rare dishes cos I like them[ most times i add them with onion/garlic and this works out cos granparents dont eat them anyways] ...
What are the changes you have made for your loved ones? Anything drastic? do share...

I have quit sugar to a large extent with any beverages/juices over the last 4 years. Doesn't mean that I reject if there is Sugar. I prefer without sugar when there is an option. Initially I went with half sugar and then wanted to discourage my mom using half sugar or Sugar supplements in her beverages. To show that it can be done, I started ignoring sugar completely. 2 months since I moved to US, I have eaten sweets, chocolates once a while. There is no sugar in my part of the Kitchen!

I have started avoiding soft drinks/Beverages which r loaded with sugar. I take freshly made juices also without sugar. need to reduce amount of salt.
Then I have stopped eating anything to do with maida. i opt for Gluten free food.
These changes were not made for the loved ones, but for my own good.
